Flat Dry or Hang Dry? A Care Guide for Delicate Sleepwear

Drying can affect the shape of delicate sleepwear as much as washing does. Satin, lace, mesh, slim straps, and tie-back details each respond differently to weight and heat. The safest answer is always the garment care label, but understanding when to dry flat and when to use a hanger can help you follow those instructions with more care.

Remove Water Without Twisting

After a gentle wash, support the entire garment as you lift it from the water. Do not wring, twist, or pull it by the straps. Place it on a clean towel, roll the towel loosely, and press to absorb excess moisture. This reduces drying time without forcing wet fabric out of shape.

Choose Flat Drying for Delicate Construction

Flat drying is often the gentler option for fine mesh, substantial lace panels, bias-cut satin, or garments that feel heavy when wet. Lay the piece on a dry towel or ventilated mesh rack in its natural shape. Keep straps straight, separate layered areas, and turn the garment once if the underside remains damp.

Dry away from radiators, strong sunlight, and humid corners. Direct heat can mark satin, weaken elastic, or make trim feel stiff. Replace the towel if it becomes saturated, and wait until every seam and layered panel is fully dry before storage.

Hang Only When the Label and Structure Allow It

If the care label permits hanging, use a clean padded hanger and support the garment at its strongest points. Avoid thin wire hangers and do not suspend a wet dress from one narrow strap. For a lightweight piece, fold it over the hanger bar with a clean towel between the fabric and the bar, then adjust it once most moisture has released.
